Vision Therapy FAQs

When your muscles are damaged, physical therapy will help you to live a full life despite your physical limits. When it comes to eyesight problems, vision therapy fills the same purpose. At Southwest Orlando Eye Care we care for many patients with a wide variety of vision problems, using a long list of techniques to help them to improve their eyesight. Most of our patients have a lot of questions when they first discover a need for vision therapy. Here are some of the more common ones:

Vision Therapy FAQs

What is Vision Therapy?

When a patient has a vision problem that neither eyeglasses or surgery can correct, vision therapy is often the right option. Vision therapy works on the eyes and the brain much like physical therapy works on the muscles. Children with learning disabilities often have vision problems as the cause, and a good number of them see a great improvement in their grades after therapy. The techniques consist of a set number of exercises prescribed by an eye doctor.

What Conditions Does Vision Therapy Treat?

Vision therapy isn't about making the eyes stronger, it's about making a better connection between the eyes and the brain. It can be effective for children as well as adults and can be used for treating many conditions, including:

  • Amblyopia, or lazy eye

  • Strabismus, or crossed eye

  • Focus disorders

  • Eye teaming

  • Learning-related vision problems

What Will My Vision Therapy Sessions Be Like?

When our eye doctor designs a vision therapy program for you, it will include a series of vision exercises designed to improve the connection between your eyes and your brain. You'll come into our office twice a week, and each therapy session will last between 30 and 60 minutes. The doctor may also provide you with exercises you can do at home to continue the therapy in between office sessions. The treatment will continue until your eyesight begins to show improvement.

Is There Proof That Vision Therapy Works?

Numerous studies have shown that vision therapy is about as effective as physical therapy and occupational therapy. It's known that well over half of all children with troubles in school can track those troubles down to vision problems. Doctors providing vision therapy have found a large number of these children to have improved grades as well as reducing behavior problems tied to the inability to pay attention in class.
